If you search for Bluesky's user count in May 2026, you will find figures ranging from 42.3 million to over 44 million registered accounts, and monthly active user estimates spanning 12 million to 27.5 million. All of these are published by credible-looking sources. Most of them cite a real methodology.

This month's report is less about a new number and more about why that spread exists – because understanding it is the only way to use any of these figures responsibly.

May 2026 Snapshot

Metric May 2026 Reliability
Registered accounts ~44 million (sources cite 42.3M–44M) Good – disagreement is mostly staleness
Monthly active users 12–27.5 million Poor – definitional, not resolvable
Daily active users ~1.5–3 million Moderate
Monthly registration growth ~1.5 million Good

Source of Disagreement #1: Staleness

This is the boring explanation and it accounts for most of the variance in registered-account figures.

Most "Bluesky statistics 2026" pages are updated quarterly at best. A page refreshed in February will cite February's number with a 2026 dateline all year. When Bluesky is adding 1.5 million accounts a month, a three-month-old figure is off by 4.5 million – which is exactly the size of the 42.3M-to-44M gap people find confusing.

Practical rule: check when the page was actually updated, not what year is in the headline. If it does not say, assume it is stale.

Source of Disagreement #2: What "Active" Means

This one is not resolvable by better data hygiene, because the sources are measuring different populations.

The three methodologies

Method Counts Misses Typical result
Mobile analytics panels App sessions on tracked mobile devices Web users, third-party clients, untracked devices Low (12–15M MAU)
Network-side record counting Any account writing any record in 30 days Nothing – but includes bots and automation High (25–27.5M MAU)
Survey panels Self-reported usage Accuracy at small platform scale Widely variable

None of these is fraudulent. A network-side count that says 27.5 million accounts touched the AT Protocol in the last 30 days is true. It is also counting a bot that likes 400 posts a day as a monthly active user, which is not what a marketer means by the term.

Our position

For anything commercial, use daily active users. The DAU estimates cluster far more tightly than MAU estimates do, and DAU is what actually determines whether your post gets seen. Everything else is a vanity metric with a footnote.

Source of Disagreement #3: Registered vs Active Is Genuinely Confusing

Bluesky's ratio between registered accounts and daily users is unusually wide – roughly 8–9% of registered accounts show up on a given day. That gap is a direct legacy of the platform's growth pattern: several enormous single-event migration waves that recruited millions of accounts, most of which never formed a habit.

The result is that "Bluesky has 44 million users" and "Bluesky has 2.5 million daily users" are both defensible sentences describing the same platform, and they will lead a reader to opposite conclusions. We wrote a full breakdown of this in registered users vs active users.

How to Vet a Bluesky Statistic

A short checklist, useful for any platform stat but especially this one:

  1. What is the metric? Registered, MAU or DAU. If the page says "users" without qualifying, discard it.
  2. When was it measured? Not when the article is dated – when the underlying data was collected.
  3. Who measured it? Bluesky's own reporting, a named analytics firm, or an uncited aggregation of other blogs.
  4. Does it distinguish bots? Almost none do. Assume network-side counts include automation.
  5. Does mobile-only matter here? Bluesky has meaningful web and third-party client usage, so mobile panels undercount.

Applying this eliminates most of the numbers in circulation, which is the point.

What Actually Changed This Month

Setting the measurement debate aside, the substantive picture in May 2026 is unchanged from April:

  • Registrations continue at roughly 1.5 million per month, steady and unspectacular.
  • Daily engagement remains flat – well below the June 2025 peak of ~4.1 million.
  • Bluesky's 2026 roadmap work on Discover, follow recommendations and real-time features has not yet moved DAU in a way third-party measurement can detect. It would be early if it had.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Bluesky's official user count?

Bluesky publishes registered account totals; its 2025 transparency report put the year-end figure at 41.41 million. It does not publish MAU or DAU.

Which Bluesky statistic should I cite?

Registered accounts if you want the defensible, official number. Daily active users if you want the number that predicts reach. Never MAU without stating the methodology.

Why does one site say 42.3 million and another says 44 million?

Almost certainly staleness. At 1.5 million new accounts a month, a difference of 1.7 million is about five weeks of data collection lag.
