If you searched for Bluesky MAU and got five different answers, you are not doing anything wrong. Bluesky does not publish a monthly active user number. Every figure you have seen is an estimate, and the estimates disagree by more than a factor of two.

This post gives you the numbers we can actually stand behind for March 2026, explains why the published figures differ so wildly, and tells you which one to use depending on what you are trying to decide.

The Short Answer

Metric March 2026 estimate Confidence
Registered accounts ~42 million High – Bluesky publishes this
Monthly active users (MAU) 12–27.5 million Low – no official figure, methodologies conflict
Daily active users (DAU) ~3.0–3.7 million Medium – multiple independent trackers agree
DAU / registered ratio ~8–9% Medium

If you need one number for a slide, use daily active users, not MAU. It is the metric independent trackers agree on most closely, and it is the one that actually predicts whether your posts will be seen.

Registered Users: The Number Bluesky Actually Publishes

This is the only figure with a clean paper trail. Bluesky's own 2025 transparency report put the network at 41.41 million registered accounts at the end of 2025, a 59.6% increase over the previous year. Growth through early 2026 has run at roughly 1.5 million new registrations per month, which puts March 2026 at approximately 42 million.

Here is the trajectory:

Date Registered accounts Notes
September 2024 10 million Pre-surge baseline
December 2025 41.41 million Official transparency report
January 2026 ~40–42 million See our January 2026 growth update
March 2026 ~42 million Extrapolated at ~1.5M/month

The important caveat: a registered account is not a person. That total includes bots, test accounts, abandoned handles, and the many people who signed up during the November 2024 migration wave and never came back. Treating 42 million as an audience size will lead you badly astray.

Why MAU Estimates Range From 12 Million to 27.5 Million

This is the part almost nobody explains, and it is the reason the search results contradict each other.

Different sources measure different things

  • Mobile analytics firms (Similarweb, Sensor Tower and friends) measure app sessions on mobile devices. They miss everyone using bsky.app in a browser and everyone using a third-party client. This undercounts.
  • Network-side estimates count accounts that produced any record on the AT Protocol in a 30-day window – a post, a like, a follow, a block. That is a very low bar, and it counts bots. This overcounts relative to "real humans who use the app."
  • Panel-based estimates extrapolate from a survey panel. These have the widest error bars of all at Bluesky's scale.

The ~27.5 million figure circulating for early 2026 comes from the broad network-side approach. The 12–15 million figure comes from stricter definitions of "active." Neither is lying. They are answering different questions.

What we would actually call MAU

If you define a monthly active user as a human who opened Bluesky at least once in the last 30 days and did something, the honest answer for March 2026 is somewhere in the middle to high teens of millions, and nobody can narrow it further without data only Bluesky has.

Daily Active Users: The Metric That Matters

DAU is where the estimates converge, and it tells a more sober story than the registration count.

  • DAU peaked at roughly 4.1 million in June 2025.
  • It fell through the second half of 2025, hitting a low near 3.5 million in October 2025 – a decline of about 40% year over year on mobile.
  • Early 2026 estimates put DAU around 3.0–3.7 million.

So Bluesky is still adding registrations while daily engagement is roughly flat to down. That gap is the single most important fact about the platform in 2026, and it is why the "40 million users!" headline is misleading for anyone making a marketing decision.

What an 8–9% DAU/registered ratio means

Roughly 8 to 9 out of every 100 registered Bluesky accounts show up on a given day. For comparison, mature social networks typically run far higher. This is not a death sentence – it reflects a platform with a large dormant signup base from its viral moments – but it does mean your realistic reachable audience is measured in millions, not tens of millions.

How to Use These Numbers

If you are a creator or brand

Plan against DAU, not registrations. A Bluesky audience of 3–4 million daily actives that skews young, technical, and highly engaged is a genuinely valuable audience – it is just not a mass-market one. Our guide to gaining Bluesky followers in 2026 works from the same assumption.

If you are a developer

Firehose volume tracks activity, not registrations. If you are sizing infrastructure, model against posting rates rather than account totals – see our firehose streaming guide for real throughput figures.

If you are writing about the platform

Always say which number you mean. "Bluesky has 42 million users" and "Bluesky has 3.5 million daily users" are both true and describe wildly different platforms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Bluesky officially report MAU?

No. Bluesky publishes registered account totals and transparency reports, but it has never released an official monthly active user figure. Any MAU number you see is a third-party estimate.

Why do some sites say 27.5 million MAU and others say 12 million?

They use different definitions of "active." The higher figure counts any account that touched the network in 30 days, including bots and automated accounts. The lower figure counts app sessions from real devices. See the methodology section above.

Is Bluesky growing or shrinking in 2026?

Both, depending on the metric. Registrations continue to climb at roughly 1.5 million per month. Daily engagement is flat to modestly down from its mid-2025 peak.

Where can I track this myself?

Bluesky's own stats endpoint reports registered accounts, and the firehose gives you real-time posting volume if you want to build your own activity metric.
