June 2026 is a useful checkpoint, because it is exactly one year since Bluesky's daily active user count peaked. Comparing the platform to itself twelve months on tells you more than any single month's estimate.
June 2026 vs June 2025
| Metric | June 2025 | June 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Registered accounts | ~28–30 million | ~45 million | Up sharply |
| Daily active users | ~4.1 million (peak) | ~1.5–3 million | Down |
| DAU / registered | ~14% | ~8–9% | Down |
| Monthly registration growth | Higher, event-driven | ~1.5 million, steady | More stable, smaller |
That is the whole story of Bluesky's last year in four rows: the platform got substantially bigger and somewhat quieter at the same time.
The Peak, and What Came After
Daily active users topped out around 4.1 million in June 2025. Mobile DAU then declined roughly 40% year over year through late 2025, bottoming near 3.5 million in October. Through the first half of 2026 the number has been broadly flat in the 1.5–3 million range depending on whether you count web and third-party clients.
Meanwhile registrations never stopped. 41.41 million at the end of 2025, roughly 43.5 million in April, and approaching 45 million now. Consistent, unglamorous growth of about 1.5 million accounts a month.
The mechanical result is a widening gap. Every month adds 1.5 million accounts to the denominator without adding to the numerator, so the "percentage of users who are active" figure will keep declining even if raw engagement is perfectly stable. Be careful with that ratio – it can look like collapse when nothing is actually changing.
What the Platform Is Doing About It
Bluesky's 2026 roadmap is, read plainly, an engagement roadmap. Almost nothing on it is aimed at acquisition:
- Discover feed overhaul – the single biggest retention lever. New users who see a bad first feed do not come back.
- Better follow recommendations – attacking the empty-timeline problem directly.
- Real-time and "live moments" – making the platform the default place to be during breaking news, sports and elections.
- Custom feed visibility – surfacing good curation instead of leaving it buried in a tab.
- Core feature catch-up – drafts, longer video, more than four images, private bookmarks.
- Community features – group chats shipped in June 2026, a notable strategic shift toward private, sticky interaction.
The group chats launch is worth flagging as a genuine change in direction. Public-timeline social products historically retain users through habit and identity; private group conversation retains them through obligation. It is a different and generally more durable retention mechanism – though it also moves activity off the public timeline, which will not help the metrics anyone is measuring.
What to Expect Next
Two things to watch over the second half of 2026:
- Does the Discover work move DAU? This is the only number that matters. Feed quality improvements take months to show up in retention curves, so the honest window for judging this is late 2026.
- Does the World Cup show up in the data? A month-long global event is exactly the "live moment" the roadmap is betting on. If Bluesky cannot generate an engagement spike from it, that is informative.
Using These Numbers
Unchanged from previous months, and worth repeating because it is the most common mistake:
- Plan against DAU. A few million daily actives, young, international and text-first.
- Do not quote registrations as audience. "45 million users" is not a reachable audience and never was.
- Do not quote MAU without methodology. The 12M and 27M figures are both real and both nearly useless without the footnote. See our May report for the full methodology breakdown.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Bluesky losing users?
No – registrations grow every month. Daily engagement is below its 2025 peak and roughly flat, which is a different problem from losing users.
What was Bluesky's peak DAU?
Approximately 4.1 million in June 2025.
Will group chats help retention?
Plausibly, since private conversation is a stickier retention mechanism than public posting. It will also move activity off the public timeline, so its effect on measured engagement is genuinely ambiguous.
