Two-thirds of the way through 2026, it is worth stepping back from the monthly numbers and asking a bigger question: is the strategy working?
Bluesky spent this year explicitly betting on engagement over acquisition. Here is where that stands.
August 2026 Snapshot
| Metric | August 2026 | January 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Registered accounts | ~47 million | ~41.4 million |
| Monthly active users (estimates) | 12–27 million | 12–27 million |
| Daily active users (estimates) | ~1.5–3 million | ~1.5–3 million |
| DAU / registered | ~7–8% | ~8–9% |
Seven months, roughly 5.6 million new registered accounts, and daily engagement essentially unchanged. That is the year so far in one table.
The Honest Mid-Year Assessment
What has gone right
- Registration growth is stable and organic. ~1.5 million a month without needing a competitor to have a crisis is healthier than the spiky migration-driven growth of 2024, even though it is smaller.
- The platform shipped real things. Group chats, LIVE badges, private bookmarks, and ongoing feed work. This was not a year of announcements without delivery.
- The diagnosis is correct. Bluesky's January roadmap identified retention and discovery as the problem rather than blaming the market. That is more self-aware than most platforms manage.
- The active core is genuinely strong. Conversation quality, reply depth and the health of specific verticals – tech, science, publishing, journalism, football tactics – remain the platform's real asset.
What has not
- DAU has not moved. This is the number the whole strategy was aimed at, and it is flat.
- The World Cup did not convert. A month-long global event produced clear spikes and no durable lift, as we covered in July's report.
- The live-moments tooling arrived late. The curated event surfaces promised in January were not fully shipped in time for the year's biggest event.
- Discover is still the weak point. The single highest-leverage fix, and the one with the longest lead time.
The Measurement Problem Is Getting Worse
An important caveat on all of the above, and one that will matter more each month.
Third-party MAU and DAU estimates work by observing public activity – app sessions, or accounts writing public AT Protocol records. Bluesky's 2026 product direction has been steadily moving activity into places those methods cannot see:
- Group chat messages are not AT Protocol records and never touch the firehose.
- Private bookmarks generate no public signal.
- Passive reading – which better feeds should increase – produces no records at all.
A user who reads more, bookmarks more and chats more while posting less looks less active to every external tracker while being more engaged in reality. This is not a hypothetical: it is the predictable consequence of the product roadmap.
The uncomfortable conclusion is that the metrics available to outsiders are becoming less able to answer the question. We have been consistently skeptical of published MAU figures – see May's methodology breakdown – and that skepticism should increase, not decrease, from here.
What Would Actually Indicate Success
If you want to judge Bluesky's year without relying on unreliable estimates, these are better signals:
- Firehose event volume on ordinary days. Not during events – on a random Tuesday. That is the baseline activity number, and it is directly observable if you run a consumer.
- Reply depth on mid-sized accounts. Whether accounts in the 5–50K follower range are still getting real conversation, which is where platform health actually lives.
- Whether new accounts survive week one. Not measurable externally, but visible anecdotally in whether new handles you interact with are still posting a month later.
- Vertical health. Are the strong communities – tech, science, books, sports analysis – getting stronger or thinner?
Practical Guidance, Unchanged
- Plan against DAU. A few million daily actives, young, international, text-first, low competition.
- Never quote registrations as audience. 47 million is not a reachable number and never was.
- Judge by your own reach, not by published stats. Your engagement rate on your own posts is more informative than any third-party estimate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Bluesky growing in 2026?
In registrations, yes – steadily, at roughly 1.5 million a month. In daily engagement, no – broadly flat all year.
What is Bluesky's current MAU?
There is no official figure. Estimates span 12 to 27 million and the spread is definitional, not resolvable with better data.
Should I still invest in Bluesky as a brand or creator?
If your audience is in one of the platform's strong verticals, yes – low competition and high engagement quality make it cheap to reach people who are hard to reach elsewhere. If you need mass-market scale, no.
